New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress registered significant gains in the latest Rajya Sabha elections, with several candidates from both parties being elected unopposed across multiple states. The uncontested victories reflect the current political arithmetic in state legislatures and underline the dominance of major parties in their respective strongholds.
A total of several Rajya Sabha seats across states including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur were decided without the need for voting after the number of candidates matched the available vacancies. The development allowed candidates to be declared elected following the completion of the nomination and withdrawal process.
BJP Strengthens Position
The BJP emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the unopposed elections. In Gujarat, all four BJP nominees were elected without a contest, further consolidating the party’s influence in the Upper House. The party also secured all three Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh, while its candidates from Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur were similarly elected unopposed.
Political observers believe these victories will strengthen the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling coalition has been steadily expanding its presence in recent years.
Congress Registers Key Wins
The Congress also recorded important successes, particularly in Karnataka and Rajasthan. In Karnataka, senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Pawan Khera and Mansoor Ali Khan, was elected unopposed. The party also retained representation in Rajasthan through uncontested victories.
Party leaders described the results as a reflection of the Congress’s continued strength in states where it remains electorally competitive. The victories are expected to bolster the opposition’s voice in parliamentary debates and legislative discussions.
Significance for Parliament
Rajya Sabha members are elected indirectly by state legislators, making assembly strength a decisive factor in determining outcomes. Unopposed victories often occur when parties possess sufficient numbers to ensure victory or when rival parties choose not to field candidates.
The latest results highlight the evolving political landscape ahead of key state and national electoral contests, while reinforcing the influence of both the BJP and Congress in India’s parliamentary system.
