Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan, for instance, accumulated more than 100 Test wickets at multiple grounds, including Colombo, Kandy and Galle. Interestingly, Ravichandran Ashwin’s career illustrates a different form of consistency. His best venue tally before his 100th Test was 38 wickets at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
This distinction is important. A bowler’s favourite ground is not necessarily determined only by the number of wickets taken. Pitch characteristics, opposition, weather, boundary dimensions and the bowler’s tactical approach can all influence performance.
The concept of a “hunting ground” also highlights the psychological side of cricket. When a bowler repeatedly succeeds at the same venue, confidence grows.
