Red Alert Issued as Monsoon Pounds National Capital
Heavy monsoon showers brought normal life to a standstill across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city. Intense rainfall led to widespread waterlogging, severe traffic congestion and disruptions to air and rail services, while authorities urged residents to remain indoors unless travel was essential.
Roads Flooded, Commuters Face Major Delays
Several key roads across Delhi, Noida and Gurugram were submerged following hours of continuous rainfall. Waterlogging slowed traffic on major arterial routes, leaving thousands of commuters stranded during peak morning hours. Civic agencies deployed emergency teams and pumping equipment to clear inundated stretches, while police advised motorists to avoid flood-prone areas and use alternate routes.
Flight and Rail Services Hit
The adverse weather also affected transport operations. Airlines including Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet issued travel advisories, warning passengers about possible delays due to poor visibility and congestion at Delhi airport. Travellers were advised to check flight status before leaving for the airport. Heavy rainfall also delayed several train services, adding to commuters’ difficulties across the region.
Authorities Issue Safety Advisory
The IMD warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning could continue through the day. Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged underpasses and remain cautious near trees and electric poles. Disaster response teams and municipal authorities remained on high alert to tackle emergencies arising from the intense monsoon conditions.
More Rain Likely Over Coming Days
Weather officials forecast continued rainfall over Delhi-NCR as the southwest monsoon remains active across northern India. While the showers have brought significant relief from the recent spell of heat and humidity, they have also exposed persistent urban flooding and drainage challenges in the capital. Authorities have appealed to citizens to monitor official weather advisories and plan their travel accordingly until conditions improve.
