In an inspiring story of grit and determination, 15-year-old Nausheen Naz from Madhya Pradesh has emerged as one of India’s most promising young hockey talents. Hailing from Seoni and raised in a financially struggling family, Naz began her journey with a broken, borrowed hockey stick, often tied together with cloth just to keep playing. Despite these challenges, her passion and resilience helped her rise through the ranks, earning a place in the national coaching camp in Bhopal.

Breakthrough performance puts her in the spotlight

Naz’s breakthrough came during the 16th Sub-Junior Women’s National Championship in Bihar, where she delivered a standout performance. Scoring nine goals in the tournament, she finished as the top scorer and was named player of the final. Her remarkable display caught the attention of selectors and paved the way for her inclusion in the national camp, a crucial step toward representing India at the international level.

National camp becomes gateway to Asia Cup dream

Currently training among the country’s best young prospects, Naz is part of the Under-18 national camp that will determine India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in Japan. The camp, organised under Hockey India, serves as the final selection platform where players are assessed on skill, fitness, and temperament before the squad is trimmed for the tournament.

Family support fuels her determination

Behind Naz’s journey is the unwavering support of her father, a daily-wage labourer earning around ₹250 a day. Despite financial constraints and social challenges, he has stood firmly by her ambitions, defending her right to pursue hockey. Training often with borrowed equipment, Naz continues to push forward with a singular goal—to represent India on the international stage.

A symbol of grassroots Indian hockey spirit

Nausheen Naz’s journey reflects the enduring spirit of Indian hockey, where talent from small towns continues to rise against the odds. As she edges closer to a place in the national squad, her story stands as a powerful reminder that determination and belief can overcome even the toughest barriers.
