How a Tamil cinema icon transformed into one of Tamil Nadu’s most influential public leaders
Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, known popularly as Vijay, has long been celebrated as one of Tamil cinema’s most beloved stars. From action-packed entertainers to heartfelt romantic dramas, his films shaped the childhood and youth of millions across generations. Yet beyond the lights, cameras, fame, and box office success, Vijay’s journey slowly evolved into something much larger, the journey of a people’s leader.
Born on 22 June 1974 in Chennai, Vijay was introduced to cinema at a very young age. Being the son of film producer and director S. A. Chandrasekhar, he naturally stepped into the film world through small, uncredited child roles in movies produced by his father. Though many recognised his early connection to cinema, very few expected the young boy to one day become one of the biggest stars in the Tamil film industry.
Vijay made his debut as a lead actor in the 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu at just eighteen years old. His early years in cinema were far from easy. Several of his films struggled at the box office, and he often faced criticism regarding his acting and screen presence. In February 2024, Vijay officially entered politics by launching his party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, commonly known as TVK. His political entry did not feel sudden, as many people had observed his growing social involvement for years. He stepped away from his successful film career to fully focus on public service, marking one of the most talked-about transitions in recent Tamil Nadu politics.
What made Vijay’s political rise especially significant was the strength of his grassroots support. His years of connecting with people through cinema and social outreach had already created a powerful network of loyal supporters across the state. His campaign style, heavily supported through digital platforms and youth participation, gave him a modern and energetic political image.
Following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Vijay’s party emerged as a major political force after securing a remarkable number of seats. His victory symbolised more than political success, it reflected the trust many people had placed in him as a voice for change.
Vijay’s journey from actor to leader remains one of determination, reinvention, and connection with the public. From cinema screens to political stages, he continues to hold a unique place in the hearts of millions, proving that influence built through genuine people’s support can extend far beyond entertainment.
