The successful launch of ISRO’s GSLV-F17 carrying EOS-05 marks an important step in India’s growing space capabilities. The rocket lifted off from Sriharikota at 2:55 am on September 4 and placed the 2,367-kg Earth observation satellite into its intended sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit.
The significance of the mission lies in where EOS-05 is headed. Unlike most Indian Earth-observation satellites operating from lower orbits, EOS-05 is designed to eventually operate from a geosynchronous orbit roughly 36,000 km above Earth. From this position, it can repeatedly observe large areas, potentially providing near real-time information for disaster management, agriculture, forestry and water-resource monitoring.
More Than a Successful Launch
The mission also represents a major confidence boost for ISRO’s GSLV programme. GSLV-F17 is the 19th GSLV flight and successfully carried the heaviest payload yet placed by the vehicle, according to ISRO Chairman V Narayanan. The success follows the 2021 failure of GSLV-F10, which lost the earlier EOS-03 satellite because of an anomaly involving its cryogenic upper stage.
For India, the bigger opportunity is data. Faster and more frequent observation can strengthen early warning and response during cyclones, cloudbursts, floods and other rapidly developing events. It can also improve monitoring of agricultural and environmental changes.
EOS-05 therefore represents a shift from simply observing Earth to observing it more continuously. As the satellite undergoes orbit-raising manoeuvres before reaching its final geosynchronous position, its operational performance will determine how much of this potential becomes practical capability.
