Rain Interrupts Sinner’s Dominant Run in Rome
World number one Jannik Sinner moved within touching distance of the Italian Open final before heavy rain forced the suspension of his semi-final clash against Daniil Medvedev in Rome.
At the time play was halted, the Italian star was leading 6-2, 5-7, 4-2 on Centre Court after a high-intensity battle that tested both players physically and mentally. Tournament organisers later confirmed that the match would resume on Saturday following persistent rain delays across the Italian capital.
Sinner Chasing Historic Achievement
Sinner entered the semi-final carrying extraordinary momentum, having already recorded 32 consecutive ATP Masters 1000 victories — surpassing Novak Djokovic’s previous record. The 24-year-old is now chasing a sixth straight Masters 1000 title and is attempting to win the only major Masters trophy missing from his collection.
The Italian has dominated the tournament so far, not dropping a single set until Medvedev fought back strongly in the second set of the semi-final. Sinner initially looked unstoppable, racing through the opening set while barely losing points on serve.
Medvedev Fights Back Before Suspension
Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev responded impressively after a difficult start, raising his level to claim the second set and become the first player in the tournament to take a set off Sinner.
However, Sinner regained control early in the deciding set despite showing visible signs of cramping and requiring a medical timeout during the match. The home crowd in Rome erupted after the Italian secured an early break before rain eventually stopped play.
Ruud Awaits Winner in Final
The winner of the suspended semi-final will face Norway’s Casper Ruud in the championship match. Ruud booked his place in the final after crushing Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in a dominant semi-final performance.
Sinner’s remarkable 2026 season has already included Masters 1000 titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid, strengthening his status as the leading force in men’s tennis this year.
