As Kerala heads into a crucial Assembly election, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has struck a confident yet urgent tone, describing the upcoming contest as one the party “should win.” His remarks underline the high stakes for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in a state where political patterns are shifting.
Tharoor Calls It a ‘Must-Win’ Election
Tharoor emphasised that Kerala represents a significant opportunity for Congress to reclaim power. Traditionally, the state has alternated between the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF). However, the LDF’s return to power in the last election broke this pattern, making the upcoming polls even more critical.
According to him, the party is determined not to allow a repeat of that trend and is gearing up for a strong electoral challenge.
Congress Strategy Against LDF Rule
The Congress leadership is focusing on presenting a clear alternative to the incumbent government. Tharoor indicated that the party aims to “change the government again,” signalling a campaign built on anti-incumbency sentiment and governance issues.
His growing role in the campaign—reportedly as a key strategist and campaign committee co-chair—reflects the party’s reliance on experienced and nationally recognised leaders.
Time Crunch and Campaign Push
One of the major challenges flagged by Tharoor is time. With elections announced earlier than expected, political parties have limited weeks to mobilise. He noted that the compressed timeline has taken many by surprise, intensifying campaign efforts across the state.
Tharoor himself is expected to prioritise campaigning, even if it impacts his parliamentary schedule, highlighting the importance of the election for the party.
Changing Political Landscape in Kerala
Kerala’s political landscape is evolving, with emerging voter shifts and increased competition. Recent local election trends and the rise of alternative political forces indicate a more complex electoral battle.
In this context, Tharoor’s perspective reflects both confidence and caution—confidence in Congress’s chances, and caution about the dynamic nature of voter sentiment.
As the countdown to the polls begins, the Kerala election is shaping up to be a decisive test—not just for the Congress, but for the state’s long-standing political rhythm.
