At least four people were killed and dozens injured after Russia launched one of its largest aerial attacks on Ukraine in recent months, intensifying fears of further escalation in the ongoing war. Ukrainian officials said the overnight assault involved missiles, drones, and heavy bombardment targeting multiple cities and infrastructure facilities across the country.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the attacks hit residential areas, energy infrastructure, and industrial sites in regions including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Emergency services said dozens of civilians suffered injuries, while rescue operations continued through the night to search damaged buildings for survivors.
Ukraine’s Air Force stated that Russia launched a combination of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and Iranian-designed Shahed drones during the operation. Air defence systems reportedly intercepted several incoming projectiles, but multiple strikes still caused significant destruction.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks and urged Western allies to speed up military aid deliveries, particularly advanced air defence systems. He described the latest assault as another example of Russia targeting civilians and critical infrastructure.
Russia has not officially commented in detail on the latest strikes, though Moscow has repeatedly claimed that its military operations focus on military and strategic targets linked to Ukraine’s defence capabilities.
The renewed attacks come amid stalled ceasefire discussions and increasing battlefield pressure in eastern Ukraine. Analysts say both sides are intensifying operations ahead of expected summer offensives, while diplomatic efforts remain largely frozen.
Several European leaders condemned the strikes and reaffirmed support for Ukraine. NATO officials warned that continued Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure risk worsening the humanitarian situation and destabilising broader regional security.
The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has already caused tens of thousands of deaths, mass displacement, and severe damage to Ukraine’s economy and infrastructure. Recent months have seen increased use of drones and long-range missile attacks by both sides.
Global markets also reacted cautiously to the escalation, with concerns growing over geopolitical instability, energy security, and potential disruptions to grain exports from the region.
