Crawford, Rodriguez Deliver in Crucial Late Innings
The Seattle Mariners produced a disciplined late-game performance to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 in a tightly contested Major League Baseball clash on Friday night. Timely hitting in the seventh and eighth innings, combined with a dominant bullpen display, helped Seattle secure an important victory after another low-scoring affair.
Seattle continued its recent trend of playing close games but found enough offense when it mattered most to overcome Cleveland’s resilient pitching effort.
Emerson’s Homer Sparks Mariners
The Mariners opened the scoring in the third inning when rookie Colt Emerson launched a solo home run, providing Seattle with an early advantage. Cleveland responded in the bottom of the first through rookie Kahlil Watson, whose RBI double drove in Kyle Manzardo to level the contest at 1-1.
Both starting pitchers settled into an impressive rhythm after the early exchanges. Seattle’s Luis Castillo delivered six solid innings, allowing just one run while striking out four batters. Across the diamond, Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo matched him almost pitch for pitch, striking out nine over six innings and limiting the Mariners to a single run.
Late Offensive Push Decides the Game
The breakthrough came in the seventh inning when Cleveland reliever Tim Herrin issued two walks, creating an opportunity for Seattle. Veteran infielder J.P. Crawford capitalized with an infield single that brought home the go-ahead run and shifted the momentum firmly in the Mariners’ favour.
Seattle added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Julio Rodriguez produced an RBI hit to extend the lead to 3-1, giving the visitors valuable breathing space heading into the final inning.
Bullpen Seals Comfortable Finish
After Castillo’s departure, Seattle’s bullpen took complete control of the contest. The relief unit retired the final 15 Cleveland batters without allowing a baserunner, shutting down any hopes of a late comeback.
Closer Andrés Muñoz finished the job by recording his 15th save of the season, while Castillo earned his first victory since May 14. Herrin was charged with the loss after surrendering the decisive run.
Despite another strong outing from Cantillo and continued impressive form from rookie Watson, Cleveland’s offense struggled to generate sustained pressure. The victory gives Seattle valuable momentum as both clubs continue their push in a highly competitive American League race.
