Menlo Park: Meta Platforms has unveiled Muse Image, its first in-house image-generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, marking a major expansion of the company’s generative AI capabilities across its ecosystem. The new model is being integrated into the Meta AI chatbot and will power image creation features across Instagram, WhatsApp, and, later, Facebook and Messenger.
Muse Image enables users to generate images from detailed text prompts, upload existing photos as references, and edit AI-generated content using sketches or annotations. Meta says the model is designed to better understand complex instructions and provide more precise, editable visual outputs than its previous AI image tools.
As part of the rollout, Muse Image will introduce more than 30 new AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories and support AI image generation in direct chats through Meta AI on WhatsApp in selected countries. The company plans to gradually expand availability to additional markets and integrate the technology into Facebook and Messenger.
Meta said basic access to Muse Image will be available free through Meta AI, while advanced image-creation capabilities will be offered under the company’s subscription plans. The launch follows the introduction of Muse Spark, Meta’s text-and-reasoning AI model released earlier this year, and comes alongside an early preview of Muse Video, an AI-powered video generation model currently under development.
The release reflects Meta’s broader effort to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving AI market, where it is competing with companies such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. The company has significantly increased investments in AI infrastructure and talent through Meta Superintelligence Labs to accelerate development of next-generation multimodal AI systems.
Industry analysts believe Muse Image could enhance Meta’s creator and advertising ecosystem by making it easier to produce marketing visuals, social media content and branded images directly within the company’s apps. The tighter integration of AI tools is also expected to encourage greater engagement across Meta’s platforms.
The launch underscores Meta’s ambition to make generative AI a core part of everyday user experiences, while positioning its applications as comprehensive AI-powered platforms for communication, creativity and content creation.
