Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has highlighted the durability of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, saying the road remains pothole-free nearly 27 years after its construction. Speaking at the Festival of Thinkers in Pune, Gadkari argued that successful infrastructure projects often receive less attention than failures and called for a stronger focus on long-term road quality.
Gadkari’s remarks came amid discussion over the recently developed Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link, where damage and a landslide had triggered criticism on social media. He clarified that the Missing Link was a Maharashtra government project and said he faced criticism despite not being responsible for its construction.
The larger point behind Gadkari’s statement is about infrastructure durability. According to him, roads should not be planned merely to meet today’s requirements. Instead, infrastructure projects should be designed with a 25-to-50-year perspective, taking future traffic growth, technology and changing environmental conditions into account.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is particularly important in this context because it became one of India’s landmark access-controlled expressways and created a faster connection between two major Maharashtra cities. Its long-term performance has often been cited as an example of how engineering quality and maintenance can influence the lifespan of major road infrastructure.
However, the comparison also needs some context. A road remaining in good condition does not mean that every section or related project connected to the corridor will perform identically. Construction quality, drainage, traffic loads, geological conditions, maintenance and weather exposure can vary significantly from one project to another.
Gadkari’s comments therefore raise a broader question for India’s rapidly expanding highway network: should infrastructure success be measured by how quickly a project is completed, or by how well it performs decades later?
For India, the second measure could become increasingly important. The country is investing heavily in expressways, highways, bridges and tunnels. If these projects are designed for longer operational lives and supported by better monitoring technology, the economic benefits could extend well beyond faster transportation.
Gadkari has also advocated using technology to identify road defects before they become major problems. This approach could reduce maintenance costs and improve road safety by moving from reactive repairs towards preventive maintenance.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway story therefore offers a useful lesson in infrastructure planning. Building a road is only the beginning. Its real value is determined by how reliably it serves citizens years after the inauguration.
