The flood situation in Odisha has deteriorated significantly after days of incessant rainfall caused the Baitarani and Budhabalanga rivers to overflow, inundating several villages, roads, and low-lying areas across northern districts. Continuous heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life in districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar, with authorities stepping up rescue, evacuation, and relief efforts.
The Odisha Water Resources Department has warned that river levels may continue to rise as rainfall persists, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
Major Rivers Flow Above Danger Levels
According to officials, the Baitarani River crossed the danger mark at several monitoring stations, while the Budhabalanga River also swelled beyond safe levels following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
The overflowing rivers have submerged roads, bridges, and agricultural fields, cutting off connectivity to several villages. Authorities are continuously monitoring water levels and have issued advisories to residents living near riverbanks.
Roads and Low-Lying Areas Under Water
Floodwaters have entered residential areas and submerged numerous roads, making transportation difficult across affected districts. Several internal roads have become impassable, while waterlogging has disrupted traffic movement and daily activities.
In Balasore and nearby regions, continuous rainfall has led to urban flooding, with markets, residential colonies, and public infrastructure affected. Many schools and government offices have also reported disruptions due to waterlogging.

The Odisha government has deployed disaster response teams to vulnerable locations. District administrations, along with the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire services, are assisting in evacuating residents from flood-prone villages.
Relief camps have been established to provide shelter, food, drinking water, and medical assistance to affected families. Officials are also monitoring embankments and river systems around the clock to prevent further damage.
Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flood Threat
The current flooding has been triggered by extremely heavy rainfall across northern Odisha over the past 24 to 48 hours. Several locations recorded exceptionally high rainfall, leading to rapid rises in river water levels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall in parts of the state, raising concerns that flood conditions could worsen in low-lying districts. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain updated through official weather bulletins.

Large stretches of agricultural land have been submerged, posing a threat to standing crops during the monsoon season. Floodwaters have also damaged rural roads, culverts, and other public infrastructure, affecting transportation and access to essential services.
