OpenAI has launched GPT-Live, a new generation of voice AI models designed to make conversations with ChatGPT more natural and human-like. Unlike previous voice assistants that waited for users to finish speaking, GPT-Live can listen and respond simultaneously, enabling fluid, uninterrupted conversations that closely resemble human interaction. The rollout marks a significant advancement in conversational artificial intelligence and is now available to ChatGPT users worldwide.
The new voice system introduces two models—GPT-Live-1 and the lighter GPT-Live-1 mini. GPT-Live-1 will be available to Go, Plus, and Pro subscribers, while free-tier users will receive GPT-Live-1 mini. Both models support continuous voice interaction across the ChatGPT web platform as well as Android and iOS applications.
A key feature of GPT-Live is its ability to carry on conversations while simultaneously performing background tasks. When users ask questions that require web searches, deeper reasoning, or more complex analysis, GPT-Live can delegate those tasks to more advanced AI models while continuing the voice conversation without interruption. This significantly reduces delays and creates a smoother user experience.
OpenAI has also enhanced the natural flow of conversations by enabling GPT-Live to understand pauses, acknowledge users with conversational cues such as “mm-hmm” or “got it,” and avoid interrupting speakers. The updated system also supports live translation, visual responses for topics such as weather and sports, and improved handling of multi-step requests during ongoing conversations.
According to OpenAI, GPT-Live represents a major step toward making AI assistants feel less like traditional chatbots and more like real-time conversational partners. The company believes the new architecture will improve productivity, accessibility, language learning, and hands-free assistance while laying the foundation for more advanced AI-powered voice interactions in the future.
