Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Tehran to attend the state funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, reaffirming Pakistan’s close diplomatic and religious ties with its neighbour. The visit comes as Iran prepares for one of the largest state funerals in its history under unprecedented security arrangements.
Sharif is expected to be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including senior ministers and officials. During the visit, he is also expected to meet Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, and convey Pakistan’s condolences on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan.
Iran has invited leaders and representatives from several countries to participate in the funeral ceremonies. Among those confirming attendance are delegations from India, China, and several West Asian nations. India will be represented by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Syed Ata Hasnain. China will send senior lawmaker He Wei.
The funeral will begin in Tehran before continuing to the holy city of Mashhad, where Ali Khamenei will be laid to rest. Iranian authorities have imposed extensive security measures, including tighter access controls, military deployment and airspace monitoring, amid concerns over possible security threats.
Pakistan and Iran share longstanding political, economic and religious ties, and Sharif’s participation is being viewed as a gesture of solidarity during a significant transition in Iran’s leadership. The visit is also expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on bilateral cooperation, border security and regional developments.
