New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted the transformation of India’s healthcare sector over the past 12 years, emphasizing the role of Ayushman Bharat and other flagship initiatives in making quality healthcare more affordable and accessible for millions of citizens across the country. The remarks came as the government reflected on its “Swasth Bharat” (Healthy India) journey since 2014.
In a message shared on social media and through official government outreach campaigns, the Prime Minister stated that the government’s healthcare reforms have focused on ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent citizens from accessing medical treatment. He highlighted the expansion of health infrastructure, affordable medicines and health insurance coverage as key achievements of the past decade.
A major focus of Modi’s remarks was Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which has emerged as one of the world’s largest government-funded healthcare schemes. The program provides health coverage to economically vulnerable families and offers cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals across India.
Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat was designed to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and protect families from financial hardship caused by serious illnesses. Over the years, the scheme has expanded significantly and has become a central pillar of India’s public healthcare system.
The Prime Minister also pointed to initiatives such as the expansion of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which provide medicines at lower prices, and investments in medical colleges, hospitals and digital healthcare infrastructure. According to the government, these efforts have improved healthcare accessibility in both urban and rural regions.
Healthcare reforms have been a major component of the government’s broader development agenda. Programs aimed at sanitation, preventive healthcare, vaccination, maternal health and disease management have been implemented alongside insurance-based healthcare initiatives.
The government’s healthcare strategy has also included infrastructure-focused programs such as the Pradhan Mantri Atmanirbhar Swasth Bharat Yojana, which was launched to strengthen India’s public health system and improve preparedness for future health emergencies.
Supporters of the government’s healthcare policies argue that expanded insurance coverage and improved medical infrastructure have helped millions access treatment that would otherwise have been financially difficult. They also point to the rapid growth of healthcare facilities and digital health services across the country.
The Prime Minister reiterated that the goal of a developed India by 2047 requires a strong and healthy population. He stressed that healthcare accessibility, affordability and quality would remain central priorities in the coming years.
As the Modi government completes 12 years in office, healthcare remains one of the sectors it frequently highlights as an example of large-scale public welfare reform. With continued investments planned in hospitals, medical education and health technology, the government says it aims to further strengthen the foundations of a healthier and more resilient India.
