Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development projects worth ₹4,570 crore in Assam, flagging off three new trains to enhance rail connectivity and boost economic growth in the Northeast region.
Rail and Infrastructure Boost
The initiatives include new Vande Bharat services connecting Guwahati with key cities, alongside bridge projects like the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra, cutting travel times dramatically. These aim to integrate remote areas, generate jobs, and support tourism through improved waterways and ropeways.
Regional Development Focus
Modi highlighted ₹49,725 crore tax devolution for Assam in FY 2026-27, emphasizing youth employment via infrastructure like IIM Guwahati’s campus, data centers, and 100 electric buses for cleaner urban transport in Guwahati.
Broader Impact
Part of larger plans exceeding ₹47,800 crore, including the Shillong-Silchar Corridor, these projects underscore Northeast’s strategic priority amid national growth targets.
