Rajasthan Royals (RR) delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by eight wickets in their IPL 2026 opener, prompting CSK batting coach Michael Hussey to concede that his side was thoroughly “outplayed.”
The match, held in Guwahati, saw RR outclass CSK in both bowling and batting departments, setting the tone for a strong start to their campaign.
Early collapse derails CSK innings
CSK’s innings never gained momentum after a dramatic top-order collapse. Rajasthan’s pace attack, led by Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger, reduced CSK to 41/4 during the powerplay, leaving the batting lineup under pressure.
Despite a few contributions in the middle order, CSK were bowled out for a modest 127 in 19.4 overs.
Reflecting on the performance, Hussey acknowledged that the team failed to adapt to conditions and could not recover from the early setbacks.
Royals’ young star seals emphatic chase
In response, Rajasthan Royals chased down the target in just 12.1 overs with remarkable ease. The highlight of the innings was a sensational knock from 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who smashed a rapid half-century to dismantle CSK’s bowling attack.
Suryavanshi’s aggressive approach, combined with a solid opening stand alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, ensured there were no hiccups in the chase.
Hussey calls for quick turnaround
Following the defeat, Hussey admitted that RR had outperformed CSK in all aspects of the game, particularly in the powerplay phase. He stressed the need for the team to regroup quickly and improve execution ahead of their next fixture.
With several new faces in the squad and a young core, CSK will look to bounce back swiftly, while Rajasthan Royals will aim to build on their dominant start to IPL 2026.
