BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra has accused the Congress and the INDIA bloc of attempting to undermine constitutional institutions ahead of their planned march to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Patra alleged that the Opposition’s campaign was aimed at creating political pressure and strengthening Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s position. He described the planned protest as an attempt to weaken democratic institutions.
Opposition Plans March to Election Commission
INDIA bloc MPs are scheduled to march from Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi over the ongoing dispute surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and issues related to Form 6.
The Opposition has raised concerns about alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process and has demanded action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The ECI has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and maintained that decisions related to the Bihar SIR process were taken unanimously.
Sambit Patra Challenges Rahul Gandhi’s Form 6 Claims
Patra also criticised Rahul Gandhi’s statements following the Supreme Court proceedings concerning Form 6.
The BJP leader said the Supreme Court had not declared Form 6 illegal, but had agreed to examine a petition concerning alleged changes to the form. The Election Commission has separately stated that the statutory Form 6 itself was not changed and that the declaration attached to it for the SIR process had received judicial approval.
Opposition Rejects BJP’s Position
The Opposition has continued to question the Election Commission’s handling of the electoral-roll revision process.
Rahul Gandhi has alleged that changes associated with Form 6 were made improperly and accused the Chief Election Commissioner of acting in a manner that benefited the BJP. Congress leaders have also raised questions about alleged differences within the Election Commission. The ECI has rejected these claims and said its decisions were taken unanimously.
Political Dispute Intensifies
The controversy has developed into a broader political confrontation between the BJP, Congress and other Opposition parties over electoral-roll revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission.
With the INDIA bloc proceeding with its planned march, the dispute over SIR, Form 6 and the Election Commission’s decision-making process is likely to remain a major political issue in the coming days.
