RCB Star Faces Ban Despite Title Triumph
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David has been suspended for the franchise’s opening match of IPL 2027 after breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans. The disciplinary action comes just days after RCB celebrated a historic title-winning campaign.
David was also fined 50 percent of his match fee and handed two demerit points for his conduct during the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The punishment was confirmed by the IPL governing body on Monday.
Ice-Bag Incident Triggers Action
According to IPL officials, David violated Article 2.9 of the tournament’s Code of Conduct, which prohibits players from throwing cricket equipment or any other object in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during a match. The incident occurred during the final when David aggressively threw an ice bag in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon.
The Australian batter accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Demerit Points Lead to One-Match Suspension
The suspension was not solely due to the final incident. David had already accumulated demerit points earlier in the season for separate breaches of the Code of Conduct. The latest violation took his tally to five demerit points, automatically triggering a one-match suspension under IPL regulations.
As a result, David will miss the first match of IPL 2027. If he remains with RCB, the ban will apply to Bengaluru’s season opener. Should he join another franchise before next season, the suspension will be served during that team’s first game instead.
Blow for RCB Ahead of Title Defence
The suspension is a setback for RCB as they prepare to defend their IPL crown next season. David played a crucial role in the team’s successful 2026 campaign, providing explosive finishing power in the middle order and contributing significantly in several key victories.
While the ban affects only one match, it serves as a reminder of the IPL’s strict stance on maintaining discipline and respect for match officials, regardless of a player’s stature or the importance of the occasion.
