US President Donald Trump has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a “good friend” and expressing confidence that India and the United States will soon finalize a long-awaited trade agreement. His remarks come at a crucial stage in bilateral negotiations, with both countries working to resolve the remaining issues in a proposed trade pact.
Speaking during an interaction with reporters, Trump highlighted his personal rapport with Prime Minister Modi and said the two nations enjoy a strong relationship. The US President indicated that ongoing negotiations are moving in a positive direction and suggested that a trade agreement between the world’s two largest democracies is within reach.
Trump also pointed to what he described as changing trade dynamics between the two countries, claiming that economic relations have become more balanced than in the past. He emphasized that Washington and New Delhi continue to engage constructively on trade-related issues and expressed optimism about the outcome of the discussions.
The remarks come shortly after trade officials from both countries concluded another round of negotiations in New Delhi. According to official statements, discussions covered a wide range of subjects including market access, customs procedures, trade facilitation measures, non-tariff barriers and economic security cooperation. Both sides reportedly described the talks as productive and reaffirmed their commitment to reaching an agreement.
India and the United States have been negotiating a comprehensive trade framework for several months. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated that substantial portions of the agreement have already been finalized, with discussions now focused on resolving a handful of outstanding issues.
Trade experts believe the proposed agreement could significantly strengthen economic ties between the two countries by improving market access, reducing trade barriers and encouraging investment. Sectors such as manufacturing, technology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and services are expected to benefit if a deal is finalized.
However, some challenges remain. Recent discussions have included concerns related to tariffs, non-tariff measures, supply-chain security and US investigations into imports linked to forced labour. India is also seeking favorable treatment on tariff-related issues to ensure competitiveness for its exporters in the American market.
Despite these challenges, diplomatic signals from both sides suggest a strong desire to conclude the negotiations. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor recently expressed optimism that the remaining issues could be resolved soon, while officials from both countries have described the negotiations as being in the final stages.
The personal relationship between Trump and Modi has often been viewed as an important factor in maintaining strong bilateral ties. Over the years, both leaders have publicly praised each other and emphasized the strategic importance of India-US cooperation across trade, technology, defence and global security issues.
Analysts say a successful trade agreement would mark a significant milestone in India-US relations and could further boost bilateral trade, which has grown steadily in recent years. It would also reinforce economic cooperation at a time when both countries are seeking resilient supply chains and stronger partnerships in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
With negotiations entering a decisive phase, businesses and investors on both sides are closely watching developments. Trump’s latest remarks have added to expectations that India and the United States may be closer than ever to concluding a deal that could reshape economic engagement between the two nations for years to come.
