Controversy Erupts Over MLA’s Statement
A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after a legislator from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam made remarks supporting the eradication of Sanatan Dharma, triggering sharp reactions from opposition leaders and political observers. The comments, made by TVK MLA Madhar Badhurudeen, quickly sparked debate across political and social circles.
TVK Clarifies Party’s Stand
Following the backlash, senior leaders from the Vijay-led party clarified that TVK is not against any religion and respects all faiths equally. Party representatives stated that their opposition is directed towards caste discrimination and social inequality rather than Hinduism itself. Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjuna said the party’s ideology was rooted in social justice and equality inspired by leaders such as Periyar and B.R. Ambedkar.
The MLA later issued a clarification stating that his remarks had been misunderstood and reiterated that the party does not oppose any religion. The clarification came amid increasing criticism from BJP leaders and Hindu organisations.
BJP Attacks Vijay-Led Government
Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly condemned the statement and accused the TVK government of encouraging divisive rhetoric. BJP spokespersons questioned why similar remarks were not made against other religions and alleged that such comments could harm communal harmony in the state.
The issue has also intensified political tensions following the recent floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where the TVK government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay secured majority support. The government won the confidence motion with backing from several legislators, including rebel members from rival parties.
Debate Over Sanatan Dharma Continues
The controversy has once again brought the debate surrounding Sanatan Dharma into the political spotlight in Tamil Nadu. Similar remarks made earlier by leaders from Dravidian parties had already generated nationwide discussions over religion, caste, and social justice politics.
Political analysts believe the latest controversy could become a major talking point in Tamil Nadu’s evolving political landscape, especially as the newly formed TVK government attempts to balance governance with ideological positioning.
