A Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk in the Republic of Tatarstan has killed at least 13 people, including a child, according to Russian regional authorities. At least 39 others were reported injured in the attack, which struck both industrial and residential areas.
The incident is among the deadliest recent attacks on civilians in Russia and comes as Ukraine continues its campaign of long-range drone strikes against Russian energy and industrial infrastructure.
Oil Refinery Reportedly Targeted
The attack reportedly struck the TANECO oil refinery, operated by Tatneft in Nizhnekamsk. A fire broke out at the facility following the drone attack.
Ukraine’s military said the refinery was a military target, linking the strike to its broader effort to damage Russia’s oil infrastructure and put pressure on Moscow. Russian authorities, however, have not independently confirmed all details regarding the specific target.
Casualties Rise
Initial reports from Russian authorities put the death toll at 12, but later updates raised the number to 13, with a child among those killed. Dozens of people were also injured.
Tatarstan authorities declared a period of mourning following the attack.
Ukraine Expands Long-Range Drone Campaign
Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones to strike targets deep inside Russian territory, particularly oil refineries, fuel facilities and other infrastructure considered important to Russia’s war effort.
Nizhnekamsk is located roughly 800 kilometres east of Moscow, highlighting the growing reach of Ukraine’s drone capabilities.
Russia Reports Large-Scale Drone Interceptions
The attack came amid a broader overnight wave of drone activity. Russian authorities said hundreds of Ukrainian drones were intercepted across several regions.
The scale of the reported drone campaign underlines the growing importance of unmanned aerial systems in the Russia-Ukraine war and the increasing vulnerability of infrastructure far from the front lines.
Russia and Ukraine Exchange Accusations
The latest attack occurred amid continuing strikes by both sides.
Russian attacks on Ukraine have also caused civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure, while Ukrainian officials say strikes on Russian energy facilities are intended to weaken Moscow’s ability to sustain its military campaign. Both governments generally deny deliberately targeting civilians.
Impact on Russia’s Oil Industry
The reported strike on the TANECO refinery could have wider implications because Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russia’s oil-processing infrastructure.
Repeated attacks on refineries and fuel facilities have contributed to concerns about domestic fuel supplies and refining capacity in Russia.
What Happens Next?
The latest strike is likely to increase pressure on Russia’s air-defence systems and could trigger further military retaliation. It also demonstrates how the conflict continues to expand beyond the immediate battlefield, with critical infrastructure and cities deep inside Russia increasingly exposed to long-range drone attacks.
Note: Casualty figures and details of the target remain based primarily on statements from Russian authorities and Ukrainian military claims; independent verification of some battlefield claims is not yet available.
