Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a major infrastructure boost in Union Budget 2026 with a new dedicated freight corridor connecting Dankuni in the East to Surat in the West.
Environmentally Sustainable Logistics
This east-west corridor promotes greener cargo transportation by shifting freight from roads to efficient rail networks, significantly cutting carbon emissions and fuel consumption. Spanning key industrial regions, it streamlines goods movement between major ports, manufacturing hubs, and consumption centers.
Economic and Regional Benefits
The project enhances connectivity across mineral-rich eastern states and Gujarat’s industrial powerhouse, reducing logistics costs by up to 20-30% for exporters and manufacturers. It supports Atmanirbhar Bharat by fortifying supply chains, boosting trade competitiveness, and creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs along the corridor.
This strategic initiative complements existing Dedicated Freight Corridors, positioning India as a leader in sustainable logistics infrastructure.
