A 19-year-old man has been arrested in the US state of Illinois over an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship in the Chicago suburbs. Police identified the suspect as Alexandros Paporakis, a resident of Palatine, Illinois.
Authorities said the investigation uncovered electronic communications, a document expressing white supremacist views and references to violence against people of Indian and other South Asian backgrounds. The suspect faces charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Police Investigate Alleged Attack Plan
According to investigators, police began examining the case after a person reported receiving concerning messages from Paporakis. The communications allegedly included a document outlining a mass-shooting plan and photographs of a rifle, ammunition magazines, body armour and tactical equipment.
Investigators believe the suspect may have planned an attack on October 11, potentially targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, a city southwest of Chicago. Authorities have not confirmed the exact intended location, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Suspect Allegedly Expressed White Supremacist Views
Police said a document attributed to the suspect contained extremist and white supremacist statements, including threats directed at people of Indian descent. Investigators also reported finding weapons, loaded rifle magazines, ammunition and tactical equipment during a search of his residence.
The recovered items reportedly included a tactical vest with body armour and a patch displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism. The findings form part of the evidence being examined by investigators.
Coworkers Help Alert Authorities
Investigators said the suspect had allegedly told coworkers at the Taco Bell restaurant where he worked that October 11 would be “a special day.” According to court-related reporting, he later contacted a coworker and said his gun had jammed and that he had left the location quickly.
The information shared by coworkers helped bring the alleged plan to the attention of law enforcement. Police from Palatine and Mount Prospect coordinated their response and arrested Paporakis on October 11.
Security Measures at Hindu Places of Worship
Following the discovery of the alleged plot, police notified the Aurora Police Department, which coordinated outreach to Hindu places of worship in the area. The FBI is also assisting with the investigation.
Authorities said they had not identified any known continuing threat to the public linked to the incident. The suspect was ordered detained pending further proceedings, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 30. The charges remain allegations, and the case will proceed through the US judicial system.
Investigation Continues
The case has raised concerns about threats against religious communities and the role of extremist ideologies in potential acts of violence. Law enforcement officials have stressed the importance of reporting suspicious communications and coordinating quickly when threats involve places of worship.
Investigators are continuing to review the suspect’s communications, the materials recovered from his residence and the intended target of the alleged attack.
