Sajjan Jindal Quietly Donates ₹5 Crore for Assam Flood Relief, Himanta Biswa Sarma Hails the Gesture

In a remarkable act of generosity, JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal has donated ₹5 crore to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to support victims of the devastating floods that have affected large parts of the state. What made the contribution particularly noteworthy was that it came without any announcement or publicity, prompting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to describe it as a “silent act of compassion.”

The donation comes at a time when Assam is battling one of its most severe flood seasons, with 78 people losing their lives and over three lakh residents affected across multiple districts. Relief and rehabilitation efforts are continuing as authorities work to restore normalcy.

State Learnt About Donation Through Bank Statement

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the Assam government had no prior information about the contribution. According to him, officials discovered the ₹5 crore transfer only while reviewing the bank statements of the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Sharing the incident on social media, Sarma said there had been “no announcement, no communication”, only a heartfelt contribution made quietly to support flood-affected families. He thanked Sajjan Jindal for his humility and generosity, noting that such acts of kindness inspire confidence during difficult times.

Connection Between the Jindal Family and Assam

The Chief Minister also highlighted the long-standing connection between the Jindal family and Assam. He pointed out that Savitri Jindal, Chairperson Emeritus of the OP Jindal Group and Sajjan Jindal’s mother, hails from the state.

Sarma said this connection made the donation even more meaningful and expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Assam for the family’s continued goodwill toward the state.

Flood Situation Remains Challenging

Although floodwaters have begun receding in many parts of Assam, the humanitarian crisis continues. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 3,00,000 people remain affected across several districts.

The worst-hit areas include Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat, where thousands of residents are still living in relief camps after being displaced by rising river waters. Extensive damage has been reported to homes, roads, schools, embankments, and agricultural land. More than 21,500 hectares of cropland have been submerged, while thousands of livestock have also been affected.

Relief Operations Continue

State agencies, supported by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local administration, and volunteers, continue to provide relief materials, medical assistance, and temporary shelter to affected communities.

Chief Minister Sarma has assured residents that every rupee received in the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund will be used responsibly for relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding efforts. The state government is also focusing on restoring damaged infrastructure and helping displaced families return to their homes as conditions improve.

Centre Extends Support

The flood situation has also drawn attention at the national level. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently reviewed the situation with Chief Minister Sarma and assured Assam of all necessary assistance from the Central Government for ongoing rescue and restoration efforts.

While the Chief Minister acknowledged that the floodwaters have largely receded due to the absence of heavy rainfall after July 21, he cautioned that the scale of destruction remains enormous and recovery will take time.

Fresh Rain Alert Issued

Even as relief efforts continue, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland between July 30 and August 1.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, as additional rainfall could lead to localized flooding and slow down ongoing rehabilitation work. Disaster management teams remain on standby to respond to any fresh emergencies.
