Fourteen Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu, detained by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line, were repatriated on March 14, 2026, and are heading home after diplomatic coordination.

Humanitarian Release Process

The High Commission of India in Colombo confirmed the fishermen’s handover, following routine negotiations emphasizing humanitarian grounds. They were arrested in recent Palk Bay incidents, a frequent flashpoint due to overlapping fishing zones between Ramanathapuram and northern Sri Lanka.

Ongoing India-Sri Lanka Fishermen Issue

India has secured the release of over 3,700 fishermen since 2014 through bilateral talks, with periodic exchanges easing tensions. Families in Nagapattinam and Pamban districts welcomed the news, amid calls to avoid force and resolve disputes swiftly.

Regional Diplomacy Context

Sri Lankan MP Harsha de Silva noted the perennial nature of arrests, as both nations rely on Palk Strait fisheries. New Delhi consistently urges Colombo to treat cases on livelihood merits, preventing escalation in this maritime hotspot.
