Massive Rescue Operation Uncovers Suspected Fraud Racket
In a major cross-border operation, authorities rescued 453 Nepali nationals from an alleged networking and employment fraud network operating in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district. The rescue was carried out through coordinated efforts involving Indian law enforcement agencies, Nepal Police, intelligence units, and officials from the Nepal Embassy.
Officials said the victims, comprising both men and women from different regions of Nepal, had been lured to India with promises of lucrative jobs, skill-development programmes, and attractive income opportunities. However, investigators believe many of them instead became victims of a fraudulent recruitment and networking scheme.
Victims Allegedly Trapped in Pyramid-Style Scheme
According to preliminary investigations, recruits were allegedly asked to pay membership fees ranging from ₹7,000 to ₹1 lakh in exchange for training and employment opportunities. Authorities suspect the operation functioned as a pyramid-style networking model in which participants were encouraged to recruit additional members to earn commissions.
Many victims reportedly spent months in Kushinagar waiting for promised jobs that never materialised. Some alleged that they were subjected to intimidation and restrictions when they sought to leave the programme or demanded refunds.
Multiple Arrests Made, Probe Continues
Police have arrested several individuals allegedly linked to the racket, while efforts are underway to identify the network’s key operators and financial backers. Investigators are examining the money trail and the recruitment methods used to attract hundreds of Nepali citizens into the scheme within a short period.
Authorities believe the operation may have had a wider cross-border footprint, prompting further investigations into potential accomplices in both India and Nepal.
Repatriation Process Completed
Following the rescue, all 453 Nepali nationals were transported in buses and repatriated through the India-Nepal border under official supervision. The rescued individuals were subsequently handed over to Nepalese authorities for verification, counselling, and reunification with their families.
Growing Concern Over Cross-Border Employment Scams
The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by fraudulent job-placement and networking schemes targeting vulnerable job seekers. Authorities in both countries have urged citizens to verify employment offers carefully and rely only on authorized recruitment channels when seeking work opportunities abroad.
