Japanese automobile giant Toyota is set to strengthen its footprint in India with a major new manufacturing facility focused on SUV production. The company, along with Toyota Kirloskar Motor, has announced plans to establish a new plant in Maharashtra with an annual production capacity of around 1 lakh vehicles.
The upcoming factory will be located in the Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra and is expected to begin operations by the first half of 2029. Reports indicate that the facility will mainly focus on manufacturing a new SUV model as Toyota aims to tap into the rapidly growing SUV demand in the Indian market.
According to reports, the new plant is expected to generate employment opportunities for nearly 2,800 people directly while also boosting the local automotive supplier ecosystem. The move highlights Toyota’s long-term commitment to India as one of its key global growth markets.
Toyota currently operates manufacturing facilities in Bidadi, Karnataka, where it produces popular models including the Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Innova Hycross, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The new Maharashtra plant is expected to significantly increase Toyota’s production capacity in India amid rising demand for SUVs and hybrid vehicles.
Industry experts believe Toyota’s expansion aligns with the company’s broader strategy to introduce more SUVs and electrified vehicles in India over the next few years. Reports suggest Toyota is preparing multiple upcoming launches, including hybrid and electric SUVs targeted at Indian consumers.
India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing automobile markets globally, particularly in the SUV segment, which now dominates passenger vehicle sales. Toyota’s latest investment is expected to intensify competition in the market against rivals such as Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki.
