Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday, marking a major political milestone for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the northeastern state. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several senior NDA leaders.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and members of the new cabinet. With this victory, the BJP-led NDA has formed its third consecutive government in Assam. The alliance secured a massive mandate in the 126-member Assembly by winning 102 seats, including 82 seats won by the BJP alone.
Alongside Sarma, four ministers also took oath. The ministers include BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, along with Atul Bora from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Charan Boro from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
The grand ceremony witnessed the participation of several prominent political leaders from across the country, including chief ministers and senior NDA representatives. Tight security arrangements, traffic diversions, and large-scale preparations were put in place across Guwahati ahead of the high-profile event.
Sarma’s second term is considered historic, as he has become the first non-Congress leader in Assam to return as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. BJP leaders described the victory as a reflection of continued public trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and the Assam government’s development agenda.
Ahead of the oath-taking ceremony, Sarma indicated that the NDA government’s next phase would focus heavily on implementation, governance, welfare expansion, and land reclamation initiatives. He also stated that the previous term was only a “trailer,” promising larger development plans in the new tenure.
