Smalley Holds Narrow Advantage at Aronimink

American golfer Alex Smalley carried a two-shot lead into the final round of the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania after a composed third-round performance kept him ahead in one of the tournament’s tightest leaderboards in recent years.

Smalley, considered a longshot before the tournament began, delivered a clutch birdie on the final hole of the third round to move clear of a packed chasing group. The 29-year-old entered Sunday at six-under-par, aiming for the biggest victory of his professional career.

Major Stars Remain in Contention

Despite Smalley’s lead, the championship remained wide open with several top-ranked players within striking distance. Spain’s Jon Rahm, Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg, Rory McIlroy, and defending champion Scottie Scheffler were all firmly in contention heading into the final day.

Tournament officials noted that 22 players started the final round within four shots of the lead, making it one of the most competitive PGA Championships in recent memory. Challenging course conditions, including fast greens and thick rough, prevented any player from building a dominant advantage throughout the week.

Aronimink Course Tests Golf’s Elite

Aronimink Golf Club, hosting the PGA Championship for the first time since 1962, proved to be a demanding venue for the world’s best golfers. The historic course featured more than 200 bunkers, narrow fairways, and difficult pin placements that tested precision and mental toughness.

Smalley’s steady play under pressure drew praise from analysts, especially given his limited experience competing near the top of major championships. His calm finish on Saturday placed him in a strong position to capture his first major title.

Aaron Rai Produces Dramatic Finish

The final round ultimately belonged to England’s Aaron Rai, who surged past the field with a brilliant five-under-par 65 to claim his first major championship title. Rai sealed victory with a stunning 68-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and finished three shots ahead of Jon Rahm and Smalley.
