Political Violence Returns to Centre Stage
West Bengal witnessed another major flashpoint of political violence after Chandranath Rath, a close aide and personal assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in North 24 Parganas district late Wednesday night. The killing has sharply escalated tensions in the state, with the BJP terming it a “targeted political assassination” and accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of fostering a violent political culture.
The incident occurred barely days after the West Bengal Assembly election verdict, intensifying concerns over post-poll violence and political instability in the state.
Point-Blank Shooting Near Kolkata
According to preliminary reports, Rath was returning home in his SUV near Doltala in Madhyamgram around 10:30 pm when motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted the vehicle and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene. Eyewitnesses described the attack as sudden and highly coordinated.
Police sources stated that multiple rounds were fired, with Rath sustaining fatal bullet injuries. His driver was also reportedly injured in the attack. Visuals from the scene showed shattered vehicle windows, bloodstains inside the SUV, and heavy police deployment around the area.
BJP Calls It a ‘Pre-Planned Assassination’
Reacting strongly to the killing, Suvendu Adhikari described the incident as a “cold-blooded” and “pre-planned murder,” alleging that the attackers had conducted reconnaissance before carrying out the attack.
The BJP has accused the TMC of encouraging political violence in the state, claiming the murder reflects a continuing pattern of intimidation and targeted attacks against opposition workers in Bengal. Several BJP leaders demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing.
The TMC, however, has denied involvement and termed the violence unacceptable, while also calling for a thorough investigation.
Special Investigation Team Formed
Following mounting political pressure, authorities have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior CID officials to probe the murder. Police have recovered live rounds, spent cartridges, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas as part of the investigation.
Investigators are reportedly examining whether the attackers used fake number plates and professional-grade firearms, including Glock pistols, indicating a highly planned operation.

Chandranath Rath was not merely an aide but was considered part of Suvendu Adhikari’s inner political circle. A former Indian Air Force veteran, Rath had reportedly been working closely with Adhikari since 2019 and was deeply involved in organisational coordination and constituency management.
Within BJP circles, he was viewed as a trusted and influential figure whose role was expected to expand further after the party’s recent electoral gains in the state.
