India’s Census 2027 begins its first phase on April 1, 2026, marking the country’s inaugural fully digital census with real-time data collection via mobile apps and self-enumeration portals.

Two-Phase Rollout

Houselisting operations run April 1 to September 30 across all states and UTs over 30-day windows, followed by population enumeration from February 9-28, 2027 (reference date March 1). States set specific schedules with 15-day self-enumeration options beforehand.

Digital Transformation Benefits

Cloud-based processing promises provisional results in 10 days and final data within 6-9 months—versus years for 2011’s paper census. Data collection uses Android/iOS apps in English, Hindi, and regional languages, with geo-tagging via Digital Layout Map tools.

Caste Enumeration Included

For the first time since 1931, caste data joins 33 standard questions. Three-tier enumerator training ensures accuracy amid the world’s largest statistical exercise covering every household.
