India’s central government has revised minimum wage rates for workers across skill categories, effective April 1, 2026, providing relief amid rising living costs. The update reflects adjustments in Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) for central sphere sectors.
Revised Wage Structure
New monthly rates are:
- Unskilled: ₹20,358 (₹783 daily)
- Semi-skilled: ₹22,568 (₹868 daily)
- Skilled: ₹24,804 (₹954 daily)
- Highly Skilled: ₹26,910 (₹1,035 daily)
These apply to industrial and labor-intensive sectors under central jurisdiction, with states able to set higher rates above the national floor.
Impact on Workers
The hike—roughly 10-12% over prior levels—aims to boost financial stability for millions in construction, manufacturing, and services. Critics note urban-rural disparities persist, while supporters see it countering inflation pressures from oil shocks.
Implementation Notes
Updates follow biannual VDA revisions (April/October). Employers must comply via payroll adjustments; non-adherence risks penalties under labor codes. States like Delhi may announce parallel hikes.
