Chennai: The Indian National Congress has secured the first Rajya Sabha seat available to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), after Chief Minister and TVK founder Vijay decided to allot the party’s maiden Upper House opportunity to its alliance partner. The move is being viewed as a significant political gesture that further strengthens ties between the TVK and Congress in Tamil Nadu.
The decision comes ahead of the Rajya Sabha by-election scheduled for June 18. Despite expectations within sections of the TVK that the party would use the seat to send one of its own leaders to Parliament, Vijay chose to back Congress, citing alliance commitments and political cooperation.
Congress leader Praveen Chakravarty is expected to be the party’s candidate for the seat. The allocation is expected to strengthen Congress’s presence in the Rajya Sabha while reinforcing the post-election understanding between the national party and the Vijay-led government in Tamil Nadu.
The development, however, has triggered sharp reactions from the DMK, which recently ended its long-standing political association with Congress following major shifts in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. DMK leaders took a swipe at Congress, accusing it of abandoning a decades-old alliance for political convenience.
The Rajya Sabha seat has acquired symbolic importance because it was widely expected to mark TVK’s entry into the Upper House of Parliament. Following its historic electoral breakthrough and formation of the government in Tamil Nadu, the party had the numbers to comfortably secure the seat for itself. Instead, Vijay opted to strengthen relations with Congress by offering the opportunity to the national party.
Political observers see the move as an example of coalition management and alliance-building. By allocating the seat to Congress, Vijay appears to be signaling that his government values political stability and cooperation with allies over immediate party expansion in Parliament.
The decision also comes at a time when opposition politics is witnessing significant realignments. The split between Congress and DMK has already created friction within the broader opposition space, with the two parties distancing themselves both in Tamil Nadu and in Parliament. Recent developments, including DMK’s decision to seek separate seating arrangements from Congress in the Lok Sabha, have highlighted the growing divide.
Congress leaders have welcomed the gesture from TVK, describing it as evidence of a strong and trusting partnership. The party had earlier formally sought the Rajya Sabha seat from its ally, arguing that representation in the Upper House would strengthen its parliamentary position.
For TVK, the decision represents another step in establishing itself as a major political force capable of influencing national-level political equations. Though the party will have to wait longer to send its own representative to the Rajya Sabha, the move may help consolidate alliances that could prove important in future electoral contests.
As nominations progress for the June 18 election, the episode has once again highlighted the rapidly evolving political landscape in Tamil Nadu, where new alliances, shifting loyalties and emerging political players continue to reshape the state’s power dynamics.
