New Delhi: After days of intense heatwave conditions and soaring temperatures, residents across Delhi-NCR finally witnessed much-needed relief as thunderstorms, strong winds, dust storms and scattered rainfall brought down temperatures across the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended weather alerts till today, warning of further thunderstorm activity, lightning and gusty winds in several parts of the National Capital Region.
According to the IMD, Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and adjoining areas are likely to witness partly cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds through the day. While widespread rainfall is not expected, isolated showers may continue to provide relief from the severe heat experienced over the past week.
The sudden weather shift comes after Delhi battled one of the harshest heat spells of the season, with temperatures crossing 45°C in several areas and heatwave alerts remaining in force for multiple days. Recent rain-bearing systems and western disturbances have helped reduce temperatures significantly across the NCR region.
On Saturday evening, several parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and dust storms, prompting the IMD to issue red, orange and yellow alerts in different districts. Authorities also sent emergency weather notifications to mobile users warning of possible thunderstorms, lightning strikes and wind speeds reaching up to 90 kmph.
Weather officials have advised citizens to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during storm activity and secure loose objects that may be affected by strong winds. Traffic disruptions, reduced visibility and localised waterlogging may occur in vulnerable pockets if thunderstorm activity intensifies.
While the current weather pattern has brought welcome relief, meteorologists indicate that temperatures could gradually rise again in the coming days once the present thunderstorm system weakens. However, for now, Delhi-NCR residents can expect a temporary respite from the scorching summer heat.
