Delhi Police has identified more than 2,500 individuals with criminal backgrounds at the ongoing protest site near Jantar Mantar using its Facial Recognition System (FRS). According to police sources, the surveillance initiative is aimed at preventing wanted criminals, habitual offenders, and absconders from exploiting the large gathering to disrupt law and order.
The move comes amid heightened security following recent clashes between protesters and police in central Delhi.
Four FRS Cameras Installed Around Protest Site
To monitor the movement of people entering and leaving the protest venue, Delhi Police has installed four Facial Recognition System cameras at key entry and exit points surrounding Jantar Mantar. The cameras are connected to the Delhi Police database and automatically compare captured facial images with records of wanted persons and repeat offenders.
Officials said the technology is intended to identify individuals with criminal records without disrupting peaceful demonstrators participating in the protest.
How the Facial Recognition System Works
According to police officials, the FRS uses high-resolution cameras capable of capturing facial images from a distance. The system instantly matches the images against the police database to identify wanted criminals, fugitives, habitual offenders, and individuals classified as “Bad Characters” in police records.
If a match is detected, the concerned police unit is alerted immediately, enabling officers to take prompt action when required. Authorities said the system serves both preventive and investigative purposes during large public gatherings.
15 FIRs Registered After Recent Violence
Delhi Police has also registered 15 First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with violence that occurred during protests earlier this week. Officials stated that several anti-social elements allegedly infiltrated the gathering and attacked police personnel using knives and other sharp-edged weapons.
The FIRs relate to incidents reported over a three-day period following the clashes, as investigators continue to examine CCTV footage, digital evidence, and eyewitness accounts.
Technology Previously Used During Major Events
Police officials noted that the Facial Recognition System is not being used for the first time. Similar technology has previously been deployed during major national events, including Republic Day, Independence Day, Diwali, Holi, Eid, and Ramlila celebrations, to strengthen security and assist in identifying wanted suspects.
Authorities maintain that the technology is designed to improve public safety while allowing peaceful protests to continue under appropriate security arrangements.

With thousands of people continuing to gather at Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police has significantly increased surveillance and security measures around the protest venue. Officials say the deployment of advanced monitoring systems is intended to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the demonstrations while ensuring that lawful protesters can exercise their democratic rights peacefully.
Investigations into the recent clashes remain ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further legal action may follow based on evidence collected during the probe.
