Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined ₹24 lakh after his team committed a second slow over-rate offence during their IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. The penalty was confirmed following CSK’s crushing 89-run defeat, which also ended their playoff hopes for the season.
According to the IPL Code of Conduct, captains face stricter punishments for repeated minimum over-rate violations. Since this was Chennai Super Kings’ second offence of the season, Gaikwad received an increased fine compared to the earlier penalty imposed during CSK’s match against Delhi Capitals.
Entire CSK Squad Also Penalised
The IPL governing body stated that the remaining members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were also fined for the offence. Each player was penalised either ₹6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fee, whichever amount was lower.
The punishment added further disappointment for CSK after a difficult evening at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Gujarat Titans dominated the contest to secure a top-two finish in the IPL 2026 points table, while Chennai’s campaign officially came to an end.
Tough Season for Chennai Super Kings
IPL 2026 has proven challenging for Chennai Super Kings, with inconsistency in both batting and bowling affecting their playoff chances. Gaikwad, who took over full-time leadership responsibilities after the MS Dhoni era, has faced increasing pressure during the latter stages of the tournament.
Earlier in the season, the CSK captain was fined ₹12 lakh for the franchise’s first slow over-rate offence against Delhi Capitals. Multiple captains across franchises, including Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, have also been penalised this season as IPL authorities continue enforcing stricter time regulations.
Focus Turns to Rebuilding for Next Season
Despite the disappointing finish, Gaikwad recently assured supporters that Chennai Super Kings would return stronger in the next IPL season. The franchise is expected to review its squad balance and overall performance following one of its toughest campaigns in recent years.
The latest disciplinary action once again highlights the IPL’s strict approach toward maintaining match pace and broadcast schedules, with repeated offences leading to heavier financial penalties for teams and captains.
