Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as Assam’s Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on May 12, 2026, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) exclusive club of multi-term chief ministers led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi arrived in Guwahati to witness the swearing-in ceremony at Khanapara’s Veterinary College Field, where Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will administer oaths to Sarma and four cabinet ministers, including allies from AGP and BPF.

Sarma’s unanimous election as BJP-led NDA legislature party leader on Sunday followed the alliance’s third straight victory since 2016, solidifying BJP dominance in the Northeast. He first assumed office in 2021, becoming the fifth BJP leader to secure consecutive terms after Modi’s four in Gujarat (2001-2014), Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s three in Madhya Pradesh (2005-2018), Raman Singh’s three in Chhattisgarh (2003-2018), and N Biren Singh’s two in Manipur (2017-2022).

Sarma’s tenure has strengthened BJP’s regional footprint amid Assam’s political evolution, with Union Minister JP Nadda and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini overseeing his selection as NDA leader.
