Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s close aide Rana Sanaullah disclosed that jailed former PM Imran Khan was offered political deals twice but backed out both times, thwarting efforts for reconciliation. The revelations highlight ongoing tensions between PTI and the PML-N government amid Khan’s imprisonment.
Details of Failed Deal Attempts
The first attempt involved Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and PTI’s then-KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur before November 26, 2024, while the second came via foreign intermediaries recently, with Khan initially agreeing before withdrawing. Sanaullah emphasized the government’s preference for a political solution, but accused Khan of demanding the current administration’s ouster for his return to power.
Government Denies Leniency
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar rejected notions of special treatment, labeling Khan a “convicted criminal” with no ongoing negotiations. PTI remains defiant, with Khan’s supporters continuing protests against what they call political persecution, deepening Pakistan’s political deadlock.
