Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar will receive Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism for his actions during an alleged hijacking attempt aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the honour, praising the captain’s courage and professionalism in helping avert a potential disaster.
Pilot Injured in Cockpit Attack
The incident occurred on September 30 aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to reports, the co-pilot attacked Machchhar inside the cockpit, leaving him seriously injured and causing the aircraft to descend sharply.
Passengers Help Prevent Disaster
Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and off-duty crew members to intervene and restrain the attacker. Other pilots subsequently took control of the aircraft, which made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All occupants disembarked safely.
Israel Announces Highest Civilian Bravery Honour
Herzog announced the award while recognising six Israeli passengers who helped during the incident. He said Machchhar would receive the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism once his health improved.
The Indian captain is recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has reported that he is responding well to treatment and making steady progress.
International Recognition for His Actions
The announcement adds to the international recognition of Machchhar’s role in the incident. Leaders from India and Israel have praised his actions, while investigations into the cockpit attack continue. The circumstances and motive behind the alleged attempt remain subject to investigation.
