India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced the appointment of William (Willie) Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a major leadership shift after the sudden exit of Pieter Elbers.

Who is William Walsh?

Walsh is a veteran of the global aviation industry, having served as CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways, and later as head of International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns carriers such as Iberia and Vueling. He is currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a role he will step down from at the end of July 2026, after which he is expected to join IndiGo by early August.

Role and expectations at IndiGo

IndiGo said Walsh will oversee the overall management and strategic direction of the airline, with a focus on strengthening operational performance, expanding its network, and improving customer experience. Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta described him as an “exceptional global aviation leader” whose track record in turning around large airlines makes him well suited to steer IndiGo through its next phase of growth in one of the world’s fastest‑expanding aviation markets.

Context: leadership change after Pieter Elbers

The move follows the abrupt exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers less than three weeks prior, which had sparked questions about IndiGo’s leadership stability. Analysts see Walsh’s appointment as a signal that IndiGo is prioritizing international experience and operational discipline as it navigates intensifying competition and regulatory scrutiny in India’s aviation sector.
