Fresh political speculation has emerged in Tamil Nadu over the future of former state BJP president K. Annamalai after reports and social media discussions suggested that the former IPS officer could be considering a new political path outside the Bharatiya Janata Party. The rumours have intensified following online conversations about a possible new movement reportedly named “Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam,” though no official announcement has been made by Annamalai regarding the formation of a separate political party.
Annamalai remains one of the most prominent political figures in Tamil Nadu and played a key role in expanding the BJP’s visibility in the state between 2021 and 2025. Known for his aggressive campaigning style and sharp criticism of Dravidian parties, he emerged as one of the BJP’s most recognizable faces in Tamil Nadu politics.
The latest round of speculation gained momentum after several supporters and political observers pointed to Annamalai’s recent public positions, which appeared to differ from the BJP’s official stance on certain issues. A major example was his opposition to the CBSE notification making three languages compulsory for Class 9 students. Annamalai urged the Centre to reconsider the move, arguing that introducing a new language at that stage could place additional pressure on students and affect learning outcomes. His remarks attracted attention because they came despite the policy being linked to the BJP-led Union Government.
Political analysts believe the discussion around Annamalai’s future is also connected to developments within the BJP-AIADMK alliance. His earlier remarks against iconic Tamil Nadu leaders such as C.N. Annadurai and J. Jayalalithaa had contributed to tensions between the BJP and AIADMK. When efforts began to revive the alliance, reports suggested that a change in Tamil Nadu BJP leadership was one of the key demands raised by the AIADMK. Annamalai was subsequently replaced by Nainar Nagendran as state BJP president in 2025.
Reports have further suggested that Annamalai was not entirely comfortable with the BJP’s renewed alliance strategy in Tamil Nadu. While he later campaigned for the National Democratic Alliance during the Assembly election campaign, observers have continued to point to signs of friction between him and sections of the party leadership.
The speculation has been fuelled by Annamalai’s recent political messaging and social media activity. Some commentators noted that he congratulated actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay after the strong electoral performance of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and praised Tamil Nadu voters for rejecting vote-buying and dynastic politics. Such statements have triggered discussions about whether Annamalai is attempting to carve out a distinct political identity beyond traditional alliance politics.
However, there has been no official confirmation that Annamalai intends to leave the BJP. In earlier instances, he had publicly dismissed speculation regarding dissatisfaction over election tickets and maintained that he remained committed to campaigning for the NDA alliance. He had also previously denied rumours about floating a separate political outfit.
Annamalai’s political journey has often been associated with his belief that the BJP should build an independent base in Tamil Nadu rather than rely entirely on alliances with major Dravidian parties. During his tenure as state president, he launched large-scale outreach programmes and sought to position the BJP as a direct alternative to both the DMK and AIADMK.
For now, the reports surrounding “Makkal Sakthi Iyakkam” remain speculative, and neither Annamalai nor the BJP has issued any formal statement confirming plans for a split. Nevertheless, the growing buzz highlights the continuing political interest surrounding the former IPS officer and his future role in Tamil Nadu politics.
With the state’s political landscape undergoing rapid changes following the recent Assembly elections, any move by Annamalai would likely have significant implications for the BJP, AIADMK and the broader opposition space in Tamil Nadu. Until an official announcement is made, however, discussions about a new political outfit remain firmly in the realm of speculation.
