Rome Hosts Final Major Clay Test Before French Open
The 2026 Italian Open has officially begun in Rome, with the world’s top tennis stars arriving at the Foro Italico for one of the most important tournaments ahead of the French Open later this month.
The ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 event, running from May 5 to May 17, features elite names including world No.1 Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff. The tournament is considered the final major clay-court test before Roland Garros and often provides strong indications about players’ form heading into the second Grand Slam of the season.
Italian star Jannik Sinner enters the tournament in sensational form after winning the Madrid Open and extending his dominance on the ATP Tour. The home favourite is chasing his maiden Rome title and hopes to become the first Italian man in decades to lift the trophy on home soil.
Top Players Face Early Challenges in Rome
The opening rounds have already produced intense contests and notable storylines. Matteo Arnaldi advanced after defeating Jaume Munar in a hard-fought three-set encounter, setting up a clash with Australia’s Alex de Minaur.
On the women’s side, Filipina teenager Alex Eala impressed with a gritty victory over Magdalena Fręch to move into the second round. Jelena Ostapenko and Beatriz Haddad Maia are also among the major names beginning their campaigns in Rome this week.
However, the tournament also suffered an early setback after British player Emma Raducanu withdrew shortly before the event despite initially expressing confidence about her recovery from illness. Her withdrawal has raised fresh concerns over her fitness ahead of the French Open.
Clay-Court Battle Intensifies Ahead of Roland Garros
The Italian Open remains one of the most prestigious clay tournaments outside the French Open and has historically been a crucial preparation event for players targeting Grand Slam success in Paris.
Defending champions and top seeds will face increasing pressure as the tournament progresses toward the final stages next week. With Sinner aiming to continue his extraordinary run and the women’s draw featuring multiple title contenders, Rome is expected to deliver another highly competitive edition of the historic tournament.
