Indian Para Swimmer Creates History in 200m IM SM7 Event

Indian para swimmer Niranjan Mukundan has entered the world’s top five rankings in the 200m Individual Medley SM7 category, marking a major milestone in his inspiring career. The Bengaluru-based athlete achieved the feat after an impressive performance at the Bergen Swim Festival 2026 in Norway, where he secured five medals, including three silver and two bronze medals.

Mukundan clocked an outstanding timing of 2 minutes and 59 seconds in the 200m IM event, breaking the crucial three-minute barrier for the first time in his career. The achievement pushed him into elite global rankings and reinforced his position as one of India’s leading para athletes.

Years of Persistence Behind the Achievement

Born with spina bifida, Mukundan underwent multiple surgeries during childhood and initially took up swimming as part of rehabilitation therapy. Over the years, he transformed adversity into motivation and built a remarkable international career representing India in global competitions.

Reflecting on his latest success, Mukundan described the feeling of entering the world’s top five as “surreal,” while also emphasizing that the journey is far from complete. The swimmer stated that his focus remains on improving further and preparing for upcoming international competitions, including the Asian Para Games.

 Focused Training Delivers Results

According to Mukundan, his recent improvement came after narrowing his focus primarily to the 200m IM event rather than competing across multiple disciplines. The strategy appears to have paid off, helping him deliver one of the best performances of his career on the international stage.

The para swimmer’s journey continues to inspire athletes across the country, especially considering the physical challenges he overcame to reach the highest level of the sport. With strong momentum in 2026, Mukundan now aims to convert his growing international success into podium finishes at major championships for India.
