Back-to-Back Deaths Raise Alarm
India’s aviation sector has come under scrutiny after two commercial pilots died within a span of 48 hours, prompting serious concerns over working conditions and pilot health.
The incidents have triggered an urgent response from the Airline Pilots’ Association of India, which has flagged a growing fatigue crisis within the industry.
Pilots’ Body Flags ‘Fatigue Crisis’
ALPA India has written to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), warning that pilot fatigue is emerging as a critical safety issue.
The association has linked the recent deaths to prolonged duty hours, irregular schedules, and insufficient rest periods, urging immediate regulatory intervention.
Pilots’ representatives have also highlighted that temporary relaxations in flight duty time rules have effectively become routine practice, pushing crew to operate at the edge of permissible limits.
Delay in Rest Rules Adds to Concerns
The issue is further compounded by delays in implementing stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules, which are designed to manage pilot workload and ensure adequate rest.
Industry bodies have warned that continued deferment of these norms could undermine flight safety and worsen fatigue levels.
Understanding the Risk of Fatigue
Pilot fatigue is widely recognised as a serious aviation risk, affecting:
- Reaction time
- Decision-making
- Situational awareness
Global studies indicate that fatigue has been linked to a measurable percentage of aviation incidents, underlining its impact on safety.
Operational Pressures and Industry Expansion
India’s rapidly expanding aviation market has placed additional pressure on airlines to maximise aircraft utilisation and maintain tight schedules.
However, experts note that this growth has not always been matched by:
- Adequate crew strength
- Balanced rostering systems
- Effective fatigue management frameworks
Previous disruptions in the sector, including large-scale flight cancellations linked to crew shortages and scheduling issues, have already exposed underlying systemic challenges.
Calls for Transparency and Reform
ALPA India has demanded:
- Transparent reporting of pilot fatigue data
- Uniform implementation of duty time rules
- Removal of temporary exemptions granted to airlines
The association has emphasised that without structural reforms, fatigue-related risks could escalate further, affecting both crew welfare and passenger safety.
A Sector at a Crossroads
The recent incidents have brought renewed focus on the balance between operational efficiency and human limits in aviation.
As airlines continue to expand and competition intensifies, the spotlight is now on regulators and industry stakeholders to ensure that growth does not come at the cost of safety.
The developments underline a critical reality: in aviation, human performance remains as vital as technology, and fatigue is a risk that cannot be overlooked.
