New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, describing him as a leader who embodied the perfect blend of intellect, public service and moral conviction. Modi said Mookerjee’s life continues to inspire generations committed to national unity and selfless service.
In a message shared on the occasion, the Prime Minister said July 6 is a special day for those who cherish the ideals of nationalism and dedicated public service. He noted that Dr. Mookerjee’s courage, patriotism and unwavering commitment to the nation made him one of modern India’s most influential leaders.
Modi highlighted that although Mookerjee came from a distinguished academic family, he chose a life devoted to public service rather than personal comfort. He praised Mookerjee’s contributions as an educationist, parliamentarian and nationalist leader, saying his vision was always centred on a strong, united and prosperous India.
The Prime Minister also recalled Mookerjee’s firm stand on the unity and integrity of India, particularly his opposition to special constitutional arrangements for Jammu and Kashmir. Modi said Mookerjee’s sacrifice in pursuit of national integration remains an enduring source of inspiration for millions of Indians.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was India’s first Minister of Industry and Supply in the first Union Cabinet after Independence. He later founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, the political organisation that eventually evolved into today’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He died in custody in Jammu and Kashmir in 1953 after being arrested during a protest against the state’s permit system.
The 125th birth anniversary is being observed across the country through commemorative programmes, seminars and tribute events. In West Bengal, the state government declared July 6 a public holiday to mark the occasion.
