Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Australia has marked a major milestone in India-Australia relations, with both countries announcing new initiatives to deepen cooperation in trade, defence, clean energy and regional security. During his meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a stronger strategic partnership amid evolving geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
One of the key outcomes of the visit was Australia’s decision to move forward with uranium exports to India for peaceful civilian nuclear use. The agreement is expected to support India’s ambitious clean energy goals and strengthen long-term energy security. The two countries also agreed to enhance cooperation in critical minerals, renewable energy and advanced technologies to build more resilient supply chains.
Trade and investment remained central to the discussions, with both sides committing to accelerate negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). Building on the existing India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), the proposed pact aims to increase bilateral trade, improve market access and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
The leaders also announced expanded defence cooperation, including closer maritime collaboration, joint military exercises, intelligence sharing and stronger coordination on Indo-Pacific security. Both nations emphasised the importance of maintaining a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific while addressing emerging regional security challenges.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Albanese unveiled the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), with Australia expressing support for India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The visit also highlighted the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations, supported by a vibrant Indian diaspora and growing collaboration in education, research and innovation.
The visit underscores the growing strategic importance of the India-Australia partnership as both countries seek to expand economic cooperation, strengthen energy security and enhance regional stability. Analysts believe the agreements reached during the visit will further elevate bilateral relations and contribute to long-term growth in trade, investment and defence collaboration.
