Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handwritten postcard bearing the words “Vande Mataram” has become part of India’s space history after travelling aboard Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 mission. The symbolic keepsake was among the special payloads carried on Mission Aagaman, India’s first privately developed orbital rocket launch, highlighting the nation’s growing confidence in its private space ecosystem.
The commemorative postcard, signed by the Prime Minister and dated June 26, 2026, featured the simple yet patriotic message “Vande Mataram.” According to Skyroot Aerospace, the postcard flew alongside handwritten notes from the company’s employees, investors, policymakers, and well-wishers from around the world, making the mission not only a technological achievement but also a celebration of collective aspirations.
Sharing the announcement before the launch, Skyroot Aerospace described the mission as “a celebration carried by many hands and shared by millions.” The Hyderabad-based startup said the collection of handwritten messages symbolised the dreams and ambitions of people who have supported India’s expanding private space programme.
Mission Aagaman marked a historic milestone as Vikram-1 became India’s first privately built orbital-class rocket to successfully reach orbit. Developed by former ISRO scientists, the launch vehicle demonstrated advanced indigenous technologies, including carbon composite structures, high-performance solid rocket motors and 3D-printed propulsion systems. The mission also carried multiple technology demonstration payloads for domestic and international customers, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in commercial satellite launches.
The Prime Minister has consistently encouraged greater private participation in India’s space sector following reforms that opened the industry to startups. The establishment of IN-SPACe and wider access to ISRO’s infrastructure have enabled companies like Skyroot Aerospace to develop independent launch capabilities, creating new opportunities for innovation, investment and global collaboration. Skyroot is widely regarded as one of the biggest beneficiaries of these policy reforms.
The successful journey of the “Vande Mataram” postcard has added an emotional and symbolic dimension to one of India’s most significant private space missions. Beyond its technical success, the gesture reflects the country’s ambition to combine scientific innovation with national pride. As India’s commercial space sector continues to expand, the Vikram-1 mission is expected to inspire future entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators while strengthening the nation’s position in the global space economy.
