Former India Coach Reportedly on ECB Shortlist
Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has reportedly emerged as one of the leading contenders to become England’s next Test coach following the dismissal of Brendon McCullum. According to a report in Britain’s Daily Telegraph, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has included Dravid on a shortlist of candidates as it begins the search for a new leader for its red-ball team.
The shortlist is also believed to include former England coach Andy Flower and ex-England spinner Richard Dawson. The ECB is looking to rebuild its Test side after a disappointing run under McCullum, which ended with a 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand and seven losses in England’s last nine Test matches.
Dravid’s Coaching Credentials Draw Attention
Dravid is widely regarded as one of cricket’s finest coaches, having guided India to the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup title and the 2023 World Test Championship final during his tenure as head coach. Before taking charge of the senior national team, he played a pivotal role in developing India’s next generation of cricketers through his successful stints with the National Cricket Academy and the India Under-19 team.
His reputation for discipline, technical expertise and long-term player development is believed to have impressed ECB officials, who are seeking stability and renewed success ahead of the next Ashes series.
Full-Time Role May Not Appeal to Dravid
Despite being linked with the high-profile position, reports suggest Dravid is unlikely to accept the offer. The former India captain is said to have little interest in returning to a full-time international coaching role so soon after stepping away from Team India.
The report indicates that Dravid currently prefers a lighter coaching schedule, making his appointment uncertain despite his strong credentials.
McCullum, who transformed England’s Test side with the aggressive “Bazball” approach after taking charge in 2022, has been relieved of his Test coaching duties but will continue as England’s white-ball coach through 2027. During his four-year tenure, he recorded 27 victories in 49 Tests but struggled to maintain consistency in overseas conditions, prompting the ECB to initiate a leadership change.
With the Pakistan series and preparations for the next Ashes campaign approaching, the ECB is expected to finalise its new Test coach in the coming weeks, with Dravid’s name continuing to generate considerable interest across the cricketing world.
